aunt agatha such a formidable character and so well played here. wodehouse so brilliant on aunts. makes me think of my own aunts and mysteries of female power under old patriarchy.

I sort of know what you mean! I used to like watching House before I started finding it too depressing (it is a great show IMO), and Hugh is briliant in it, and I should be happy for his success but I feel weird that he's a huge celebrity in America when he ought to be back in Britain continuing his career properly. dunno.

Actually, Jeeves is NOT a valet. He is a gentleman's gentleman. This is at least one step up the servant's hierarchy. Because he is the only servant Bertie employs he does have a lot of extra jobs, such as cooking
washing up, but he also has a lot more leeway in matters of days off
holidays. I want a Jeeves.

In his 30s, i guess - he must be about 50 now. Agreed about that American show (albeit my friends would probably beat me to jelly for saying so ;-)). And i also found J
W boring back in the 90s, but then again, what did i know? ;-) It's terrific, even after i've watched it for i-am-afraid-to-count-how-many times.

You guys are older now, that's probably why you like it better. Just a guess, with all due respect. :-)

Yes! And one of my favorite maneuvers of his occurred in another episode when he was walking Aunt Agatha's dog and whilst the dog was "doing his business" Jeeves' sort of rose up on his toes, turned his head and elevated his nose, and his cheeks turned bright red. It was brilliant!

As far as I know, a valet and a gentleman's gentleman are synonymous.

Oh yes, indeed, Sir. ;-) At least, that's exactly what i think of the situation.

But you're not going to believe me when I say they aren't, are you? Truly, a gentleman's gentleman is a higher position.

Did you ever do it? Love to see it if you did. :-D.

Well yes and no. I'm not going to simply take your word for it, but I'd love to know where you got your information, if you don't mind. Thanks.

I wouldn't do that the only show I would frown on is Benny Hill. I guess with age and maturity this show grows on you. I wonder if he ever did a cd for all the tunes he covered on this show. I would buy it ;)
Got the information ... ( 4 months ago by kitkatkarma)
Got the information from books. I learnt to read when I was about 3
some of the first books I read were P. G. Wodehouse. Not because I'm especially clever, just because they were short stories
easy to read. If you read all of them you will see the difference between a valet
a gentleman's gentleman. I also read etiquette books in which the positions are discussed. Miss Manners' guide
Debrett's etiquette both mention this.

If you were reading P.G. Wodehouse at 3, you are quite clever! I learned to read at 3 as well, but I was reading Dr. Seuss! Did P.G. Wodehouse write children's books? As for the texts you cited, I will check Debrett's. Miss Manners has written several guides. Do you recall which one mentions the distinction? Thanks.
No, he didn't write ... ( 4 months ago by kitkatkarma)
No, he didn't write children's books, my parents just didn't believe in making things too easy for us! Bastards. They read the books to us until we could read them ourselves. Lots of kids start out on real books. I think the Miss Manners guide was called The Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behaviour, or something. I'm sure I remember excruciatingly in the title. Glad you believe in research. I wouldn't just believe a stranger, either : )

Well, yes. All of her Guides have that title,I was wondering which edition(they are taken from her column which originated in the Washington Post). Now, I recall that she made the distinction between a butler and a gentleman's gentleman.Could that be to what you are referring? My parents read me the Hobbit when I was that age,but I didn't read it myself until much later and I certainly couldn't have really understood Tolkien or Wodehouse at that age,so good for you! Your parents did the right thing!

I need an Aunt Agatha! I could live like Bertie does amazing given the time. My Grandma was born around that time this gives me some idea what life was like then.

Don't worry, you're not that weird. I started reading when I was 1 (!) and I read The Hobbit at age 5.
