Rumours aside - ... ( 4 weeks ago by dormi87)
Rumours aside - there was an almost unbearable heatwave smothering Paris, and in the Palais de Champs-Elysees on the night of the performance, the temperature rose rapidly. In amongst the confusion of different dance techniques and musical styles, the audience were boiling hot and caused a commotion/riot. Nevertheless the dancers and orchestra carried on until the end - teamwork!! And for the record, Romantic music is nothing like emo... it's fucking better!

Don't insult the Romantic period to validate emo. Emo isn't a real genre--it's just a bunch of whiny teenyboppers trying to play alternative rock but failing miserably at it.

Furthermore, this isn't a Romantic piece. It's Primitivist.

1. Knowing emo bands, I doubt many of them have the slightest clue what any of Liszt, etc. pieces sound like. Emo came out of emotional hardcore, which came from hardcore punk, which came from punk. Maybe the predecessors of punk knew about them, but emo? No. 2. While this piece does contain Primitivist aspects, it is largely an impressionistic work. 3. Fantasia was amazing.

It was quite a night! Stravinski had to leave in the beginning of the prelude because he was shocked about the public reaction! And Nijinski, backstage, had to be standing on a chair shouting intructions to the dancers who couldn't hear the music anymore because of the laughs and shouts of the people in the theater! (sorry for my poor english... I hope I showed the surealism of the situation clearly :s)

nobody rioted - they just didn't like it and made a commotion - but not a big enough commotion to even cause the performance to stop... so hardly a riot in any sense of the word. Perhaps you should think outside the box for once and challenge that army of professors and "mentors" in your life who
apparently are all still excitedly talking about this huge, uncontrollable riot (and let's say there were fires, too! that would make the story even more exciting!)

I agree with you that there were most likely not any riots. I saw footage just today of the audience on opening night. People were out of their seats yelling ang argueing with one another. I also heard interviews of a few of the dancers who stated that the noise from the audience was so loud that the coriographer had to stand on a chair in the wings and yell out numbers, as the dancers couldnt hear the orchestra. The performance indeed stoped

It was not a riot by today's definition but at the time it was considered a riot and completely unthinkable. No there were no fires but police were called and like I said for the time period that was a big deal.

i can't even remember clearly now, but that comment was a reply to someone else's comment (was it to you?), i think they were talking about how it's cool that the dancers match the music. i just mean that the music of a ballet isn't purely to accompany the dancing, the dancing is a interpretation of the music. The music and the dancing are telling the story together. It just really annoys me when the choreography seems to have nothing to do with the music.
Where you watching ... ( 4 days ago by lloydgar01)
Where you watching the video to criticise it or to genuinly enjoy it. If you listened to the overture rather than just waiting for the dances to start you would have enjoyed it I'm pretty sure.
PS: All ballets have overtures without acception (that part where the curtain is closes and the music plays).
