This is from season 4 episode 11 of mythbusters. Jamie and Adam investigating crim myths. But it's really jamie who steel the show when trying to play bungler climbing in a vent. This is properly one of the most halirious myth busting they have ever done, when I saw this first time I laughed so hard. I uploaded this because this was the only clip i didn't find, I really wanted to share that moment with all mythbuster fan out there. ENJOY...

If you're on the way down, sure. But they climbing up, so rubbing yourself in grease is not much of a help is't it. But would certainly look funny.

I think, if a really strong electromagnet with a stepless regulator for magnetic power was used instead, it'd be possible to do it very silently. You could even add a very, very thin layer of something soft in between.. or could you? I guess you'd need even stronger magnets then. Still not with a normal vent, though, but with the one they made to be strong enough to let the magnets stick, sounds plausible.

But this magnets are so strong you need a license to handle them, and would even shoop you hand off if not careful enoth. It's not the magnet itself, is the metal this ventilation thrums are made of. They don't have any pulling strength and no matter how strong the magnet are.Plausible if you are miles away from anyone to here you, but Impractical for sure and even then you need fysical condition of a bullock. I don't think they gone revisit this one though.

LOL, this is one of those Mythbusters segments where I'm almost suffocating with laughter. I do think that eletromagnets would've worked better. If they were kept off until they were in contact with the duct, there would be no clanging noise. However, we then wouldn't have this hillarity.

Wouldnt probably do any good even if you'd cover the magnets with something soft, those magnets are so powerfull that the magnets "pulls" itself against the vent with so much force and speed that it would still make the huge noise :) you'd have to be superhuman to control the magnets impact speed and force against the vent walls.

Notice I said "stepless regulator for magnetic power", which is possible to make for electromagnets. It would enable you to make the magnet stronger or weaker with a knob.
