You'd think that ... ( 1 day ago by NavajoJoe66)
You'd think that someone who had the privilege of a personal appearance by none other than the Judeo-Christian version of god himself, as well as Jesus in the flesh, would have been a little more accurate in his recollection of such a momentous occasion. First he said he was 16, then he was 14. First it was angels, then it was Jesus, then it was God and Jesus together. First he had already decided no church was true, then God
Jesus informed him that no church was true. And so on. Sheesh.
As for the slavery ... ( 1 day ago by danewage)
As for the slavery issue; you mistake pro-slavery with being subject to the laws of the nation(s) of which you are part. Christ himself said that servants were to be subject to their masters as is lawful. We believe in being subject to kings, magistrates, presidents, in obeying, honouring and sustaining the law. At the time, the law was that slavery was okay, so while not actively moving to abolish it, you'll also note that no practicing Mormon indulged in slavery themeselves.
If you look back to ... ( 1 day ago by danewage)
If you look back to the ancient Christian church, you'll note that blacks weren't the only ones barred from the priesthood. In ancient Israel, only men of the tribe of Levi were permitted to hold the priesthood and officiate in temple ceremonies. Even during Jesus' ministry, the Gospel was only being preached to the Jews, all others were excluded. It took a revelation received by Peter, then the head of the Church to open the gospel doors to the world.
Revelation and ... ( 1 day ago by danewage)
Revelation and God's timetable are what opened the doors to those who have received the priesthood, both blacks, Jews and Gentiles. I don't know why it took so long with the black, God only knows, but anyone who believes in revelation will affirm that the Lord will reveal when such things are to be done, and the Church will respond immediately. FYI: the DAY the Church announced that blacks were to receive the priesthood, ordinations were already being done.

"In ancient Israel, he gave the higher at Mount Sinai, then when the people almost immediately turned to idolatry, he took away his higher law and gave them a lesser, preparatory law, we know it as the law of Moses." But not before Moses talked Him out of annihilating them all for their folly. And not before Moses killed 3000 of the men in his anger. And not before God threatened vengeance on them at a later date. God is quite the tyrant, isn't he. "Do what I say, or I will kill you." Nice.
Mormons didn't ... ( 1 day ago by NavajoJoe66)
Mormons didn't practice slavery because none of the early converts were southern plantation owners. Nearly all the converts were poor, or newly arrived immigrants from Europe. They certainly couldn't claim a higher moral ground, as these quotes by Joseph Smith attest: "We do not believe in setting the negroes free." and "The scripture stands for itself; and I believe that these men [Bible prophets] were better qualified to teach the will of God, than all the Abolitionists in the world."
Jews are still ... ( 1 day ago by danewage)
Jews are still waiting for his "first coming". As for that saying you're referring to with Joseph Smith. D
C 130:15 "Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old, thou shalt see the face of the Son of Man" That statement doesn't explicitly state that is when the Lord would come. There are many ways that Joseph would see the face of the Son of Man. However, Joseph died much younger than 85, so we'll never quite know. (cont.)

"In ancient Israel, only men of the tribe of Levi were permitted to hold the priesthood and officiate in temple ceremonies." So, god is unjust and unfairly discriminatory. That's all you're really saying here. God picks and chooses who gets the privileges not by the merits of the individual, but by which tribe or race or country you happen to be born in. Some god. You'd think a divine being would be a little more wise than that. To me, it reeks of ancient beliefs and plain old racism.

D
C 49:5-7 "5 Thus saith the Lord; for I am God, and have sent mine Only Begotten Son into the world for the redemption of the world, and have decreed that he that receiveth him shall be saved, and he that receiveth him not shall be damned
— 6 And they have done unto the Son of Man even as they listed; and he has taken his power on the bright hand of his glory, and now reigneth in the heavens, and will reign till he..." (cont.)

descends on the earth to put all enemies under his feet, which time is nigh at hand
— 7 I, the Lord God, have spoken it; but the hour and the day no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor shall they know until he comes." So no one really knows when God is coming; we know it's "soon", but anyone who claims to date His coming is ignorant and lying.

Yeah, it's such a coincidence that god changed his mind about black people after the civil rights movement.
It would reek of ... ( 1 day ago by danewage)
It would reek of such if you don't believe in a pre-mortal existence, or that the spirits of men and women predate and will outlast our bodies. There are so many things in this universe we don't understand, and yet, in our limited knowledge and the arrogance of our youth, we presume to judge the works of God foolish and cruel. what would be crueler, to be taken from the world while your soul is still salvageable? or left to ripen in sin so that no part of you could be saved?
But again, people ... ( 1 day ago by NavajoJoe66)
But again, people have believed that Jesus would return "soon" for the past 2000 years. The LDS church started out as a millenial cult. They believed the 2nd Coming would happen within their lifetimes. And no, I wasn't referring to the D
C verse; I was referring to the meeting in 1835 (recorded in the 'History of the Church' vol. 2, page 182) where Joseph Smith testified that he received a revelation that the 2nd Coming would happen within 56 years. It's just an old religious belief.
Who's to say God ... ( 1 day ago by danewage)
Who's to say God din't have a hand in the civil rights movement and events leading up to and coming away from it? He spent 2000+ years getting a set of gold plates ready for a young farm-boy in New York to receive and translate, among other things.
So, what you're ... ( 1 day ago by NavajoJoe66)
So, what you're saying is that whenever there is an injustice, we shouldn't question it, or try to change it, since it can all be explained by some sort of vague "pre-mortal existence", which no one can remember anyway. Sorry, but punishment in this life for something in a previous life is extremely unjust, if not downright evil, if you ask me, What's worse, there isn't even any evidence for this supposed "pre-mortal existence." It doesn't even make sense. Why would anyone believe this crap?
The thing is, it ... ( 1 day ago by danewage)
The thing is, it DID work, for a time; but people got greedy and selfishness took hold. Communism, though a corrupt form of it, wasn't too far off. Look at the Methodists, today; they've been living a form of the law of consecration for years. It can be done, and someday it will be done.
"Who's to say God ... ( 1 day ago by NavajoJoe66)
"Who's to say God din't have a hand in the civil rights movement and events leading up to and coming away from it?" Well, he gave us the 10 Commandments, right? Why couldn't he just come out and say that slavery is as wrong as theft and murder as well? Instead, he let millions suffer and die miserably for thousands of years. "He spent 2000+ years getting a set of gold plates ready for a young farm-boy in New York to receive and translate, among other things." Which there is no evidence of.

So would you be willing to donate 100% of your wages and all your personally owned property to the church, if it were re-institutionalized today?

It's written in a book; read it. I can see that you insist on seeing only the negative side of anything I say, so I'm thinking we may just call this exchange. Thanks though; it's given me some more study topics to go over and some things to think about. All the best in '09 :)

last comment b4 I call this one done. I'm not saying don't question, I'm saying keep a perspective. Change for the better what you can, but don't start waving the flag of hate. Remember, we're all in this together, God wants all of us back with Him. And remember, when all else fails, and your world falls apart, and life seems so unfair and cruel, the atonement of Christ will make it right. Maybe not when you want it, but it will happen. The world is unfair, but God is just and merciful.

danewage: "Thanks for spreading misinformation and lies. I hope it helps your cause in some way, cause the ends justify the means, right?" I hope you weren't speaking to me, because I've done nothing of the sort. And I certainly don't have a "cause" to promote, except maybe rational thinking. If you were speaking to me, please point out where I "spread misinformation and lies."

I have read the Book of Mormon, many times. I grew up in the church and served a mission. I'm sorry if I can't bring myself to see the positive side of racism / slavery / crazy ancient Middle Eastern religious beliefs, like you can. Thanks for the conversation, though. Hopefully you and your church can one day realize that people of same-sex orientation are people too.
"And remember, when ... ( 1 day ago by NavajoJoe66)
"And remember, when all else fails, and your world falls apart, and life seems so unfair and cruel, the atonement of Christ will make it right." Tell that to the gay people whose lives you're trying to ruin. "The world is unfair, but God is just and merciful." How about the rest of us become a little more just and merciful, and try to make the world a little more fair.
