Chess Position Practice #3: Candidate Moves
Uploaded by: jrobichess
Video Description:
This video series will focus on analyzing chess positions, and generating candidate move orders from the position without moving the pieces or using computer analysis. The goal is to improve the ability to generate lines and variations mentally during a game, and to try to come up with a move that either maintains equality on the board, or paves the way for a slight positional edge.
I recommend pausing the video at the appropriate time and generating your own candidate moves. If this is something new you are working on improving, it's recommended that you write down your lines and over time you will be able to do this all in your head during a match.

1) At 4:58, I think Nf3 is not best. After black's bishop retreats, your knight isn't doing much except defending the e-pawn and blocking a possible f-pawn move (which would get your pawn majority moving.)
2)I think the position at 6:00 favors black. White's bishop is blocked by a central pawn, making it a bad bishop. (It should have more than just a defensive role). Meanwhile, black will eventually post his bishop on the excellent g7 square.

..../P-b6, ....c5, which appears to cramp W's N and B. I would try to trade Rs, poking my K Qside, opening up the pawns to attack the W Kside. Of course, if I understand this correctly, you favor the Ruy Lopez, and here I am trying to find a better line for B.
Hmmmm. What, then? Pushing wood at dawn after ten paces?
I appreciate you bringing these to us worms, JRobic. Help us from crawling out onto the asphalt in the rain just to find the Sun come out and broil us crispy at the hands of a shar player.
