On the one hand, it's tempting to let the people who are gullible enough to believe con artists, waste there money, lives and credibility. (let the buyer beware). But in this country, some people think it's unethical for cleaver hucksters to mislead and ripoff the simple minded and uninformed.(consumer protection laws). Which do you prefer? I prefer the relative safety and protection from fraudulent claims, provided by our system. Unproven, Wishful thinking is not science you can believe in.

Real science is verified by allowing independent trials by other credible scientists. Greed and self interest would motivate anyone capable of producing one of these devices, to manufacture them and sell them for a profit. Said business would gladly profit by undercutting other existing energy providers. That's how our greed motivated system works. Any gadget that has actual value can be brought to market and will make a profit, if it is better than the existing gadget.

Hello xmrtuvgs: There is no claim of perpetual motion. Its just another SOURCE of energy, yet untapped. Get with the 21st century. Quantum zero point energy is real and has already been measured at Bell Labs (1997 S. K. Lamoreaux, et al) through the Casimir effect on MEMS (i.e. nano-machines). Do a little research. And if you think that powerful corporations can't and don't suppress technologies to secure monopolies, then I have a bridge to sell you on the moon. Cheers.

What are you talking about? Can't you get past your emotions for one second and listen to what I said. I'm not claiming these people have actually been able to CONVERT zero-point energy into another usable form or any energy for that matter. Yes there are many crackpots out there and of course you're not one of them. What I'm saying is that there is real science to quantum zero-point energy. As for tapping, you 'tap' into gravity every time you lift your arm and bring it back down, get it..

Gravitational potential is an easily ACCESSIBLE form of energy. Just because we couldn't extract energy from the atomic nucleus before the 1930's does not mean it doesn't exist. Now we tap into the nuclear force all the time. It is fools and their money that brought you electricity, radio, airplanes, quantum-tunnelling in semiconductors, nuclear fission, fusion etc... There were of course many people like you at the time of all these inventions that saw fit to only castigate and ridicule.

Like most people, you have a vague media-instilled picture of how things are discovered. The 'natural' evidence (amber, lodestone, pitchblende, soaring birds, etc.) usually lies around in plain sight until some scientist works out what is going on. His academic work is then ripped-off by mere inventors (Edison, Marconi, etc.); who then take all of the credit. Couldn't tap nuclear energy until the 1930s? What do you think makes 'hot springs' hot? And what's that very shiny thing in the sky?

PS Oh, gravitational potential is an easily accessible form of energy is it? You obviously missed Physics 101 (before missing all of the others). The gravitational field is conservative, by definition. So, there is no 'Joe' way to extract energy from it. To be fair, however, Hermann Bondi did show theoretically that one could extract gravitational energy by manipulating the shape of an entire planet. Start building now ...

P.S. Could you please show me the nuclear reaction that WE CONTROL when we use steam power from a hot spring, or energy from captured solar radiation? I suspect you must understand my argument but seem to be wrapped in semantics. The point is that there was a time when we did not KNOW the source of the sun's energy and that of hot-springs. It was a yet unknown 'tap' in other words.

You didn't say 'control'; you said 'tap'. Hot springs get their heat from fission reactions (oh, did you think that the Earth was still hot from its original formation?). Solar radiation comes from fusion reactions. The energy of coal and oil also come ultimately from the same fusion reaction. Coal and oil are mere storage-media, just as the much-vaunted hydrogen of a 'hydrogen economy' would be. This is not mere semantics, it cuts through popular misconceptions.

And remember to teach all your students that you can't get electricity from water falling in a gravitational field, because the field is conservative as you say. So is the electrostatic field. So what? And the magnetic field is NOT conservative, as with conduction current under steady-state conditions. So what? Whether a field is irrotational or divergenceless has nothing to do with whether you can extract energy from it. So get off your high-horse and then maybe we can talk. Cheers.

Dear hyperkinetic: If any of this really means anything to you, you need to go back to school. Your understanding of physics is so distorted that one would have difficulty deciding where to begin. And if you really do some honest study, you'll realize that the amount of energy in just a gram of water could power your home for a very long time. Start reading about chemistry and then work your way up to E=mc2. Then maybe you'll understand the energy in a molecule of water concept. Cheerio.

I hold no brief for fusion; I just get tired of the touchy-feely greens going on about wind, tidal and solar power as if they were some sort of bucolic ideal.
And beyond fusion reactions, of course, the ultimate cause lies in quantum mechanics.
But this is all dodging the original point: don't look to free-energy crackpots to solve energy problems. They are just conmen.
