Fuel Economy Test #5: ACETONE REVEALED!!!

Uploaded by: landongendur
Video Description:
Wonder if that additive called acetone gives better fuel economy for your car? Find out!
Sorry about the obvious spelling error at the beginning. Overall, even with the alleged 2.45% increase in fuel economy, it doesn't make financial sense to use acetone since 1 quart costs about $10 here.

The metro was ... ( 3 months ago by landongendur)
The metro was pretty much stock. The secret to the 50+ mpg is driving slowly. The car got around 80-mpg at a steady 35-mph, 55-mpg at 50-mpg, and only about 37-mpg at 70-mph. The wind resistance is what makes fuel economy drop.

You did add too ... ( 3 months ago by Tardstrifer)
You did add too much. Peak performance would require 1 fl oz/10 gal, so you added way too much acetone in the first place. You don't even know how much you added anyways. Just because you added more gasoline doesn't mean you diluted it to a more normal amount because you don't know how much acetone you added in the first place. This experiment is full of uncertainty and error and shouldn't be relevant to the discussion of whether or not acetone helps gas mileage.
Who comes up with ... ( 3 months ago by landongendur)
Who comes up with these 'peak performance' acetone mixtures anyway?
People who actually ... ( 3 months ago by Tardstrifer)
People who actually do experiments with a control, and do various trials using separate gas:acetone ratios. I also forgot to mention that the fuel efficiency boost is more apparent in vehicles that do not have a high mpg rate. It all depends on what car and how much unburned fuel the car goes through. The more unburned fuel, the more of a mpg increase. Because your vehicle was already pretty darn fuel efficient, you wouldn't have that big of an increase.

So how come the fuel economy didn't improve when I added more gasoline to the mix at the end? Wouldn't the added gasoline bring the mix to a more 'recommended' mixture?

I'm using acetone to clean sensitive electronic circuit boards for years. Whoever told You that acetone is corrosive is not serious at all. If You are really worried about corrosives in the fuel add about 0.5% two-stroke oil. You could add 1% methanol if You suspect water in the fuel tank, but add no more as methanol is powerful fuel and is better suited for low compression ratio engines. 0.2 to 0.3% of acetone will not eat away rubber parts of fuel supply system.

It was a 1997 Geo Metro with a 1.0L 3 cylinder engine with a 5 speed manual (the most fuel efficient car in Canada for '97). At 50-mph, the car has to push less wind, so that's why it got mid-50s in fuel economy.
