I think the problem ... ( 3 days ago by KRJ548)
I think the problem w/ modern music today is that, unlike past generations of music, today's music lacks purpose--whether its a political statement, a means of rebellion, or a truly new
original style. The main motivation in the music industry seems to be money, and so all we see are fad bands and carbon-copy rappers. They have a voice, but they aren't really saying anything. They use sex and other social taboos to compensate for a lack of purpose, and talent.
Money is an ... ( 3 days ago by KRJ548)
Money is an inescapable motivator, but I just feel that prior to the teen-pop fad of the late 1990s, modern music had a real purpose that transcended money. The eloquence of the lyrics, in particular, revealed that. Even in the 80s, pop groups like Wham had something different to say. They brought bubblegum pop to the forefront of the industry. Future boy bands like Nsync were just imitations of that. This, however, isn't to say that they weren't talented.

Well, there was never a time when the music business wasn't driven by money - but music is always at its best when business concerns are kept well away from the minds of musicians, and yes, lately I think that's been getting harder to do. Shows like American Idol and X-Factor are designed to capture aspiring artists when they are young and naive enough to be manipulated by record execs into short-term disposable products. For me, this is the biggest current threat to artistic integrity.

I think hip-hop is a major area of concern, also. It's capable of producing such thrilling music, but compared to rock it breeds very few original lyricists. Hip-hop leads the field in innovating new production techniques, but the lyrical content has remained bogged down in empty clich
és. It badly needs more acts as conscientious as Public Enemy, or as witty as Eminem. There's a reason why Timbaland is bigger than the acts he produces - it's because his sounds are new, but the raps aren't.
As for bubblegum ... ( 2 days ago by garethac81)
As for bubblegum pop, it never needed a message, or even that much originality - but like every other genre, it still needs strong songwriting and charismatic performers. I think the problem there is too many "svengalis" have realised that their target demographic - silly little girls - are too dumb to even notice subpar songwriting or bland performers, which is why we've gone from fresh, exciting 90's acts like Take That and East 17 to cardboard cretins like Westlife and Jonas Brothers.
The genre that is ... ( 2 days ago by garethac81)
The genre that is in the worst shape of all, in my opinion, is punk. In 30 years, we've gone from the 70's greats (The Pistols, The Misfits, The Damned, etc.) to emo (which answered the question: "What's poppier than pop-punk?") and Avril Lavigne in an Anarchy t-shirt...God save the Queen, and bloody save us, too!

I completely agree. ... ( 2 days ago by KRJ548)
I completely agree. Thats exactly what I meant by "fad" artists. The industry focuses too much on the short-term success of artists--getting a mil or two from ringtone sales--then move on to somebody else. People want to blame technology for declining music sales, but in reality, the industry today has few mainstream artists whose CDs are worth buying. Again, thats b/c most of these artists are a part of a fad; they have no originality to bring to the table. They go as quick as they come.
LOL. Yeah, Avril ... ( 2 days ago by KRJ548)
LOL. Yeah, Avril Lavigne is a joke, purely manufactured. I always think it's funny how she went from being the anti-Britney to hanging out with the likes of Paris Hilton. The same goes for the guys in Good Charolotte. People like that will never know punk because they don't understand that punk was a movement, not a hair
make-up session.
