I like it at the end when knowing what just happened the words Fail-Safe appear with the black background, the sound of engines and the screaming crowd. Menacing!

I think people get mad, and start quoting Reagan, or whomever, because they feel as powerless as the rest of us. In a nuclear age, we cannot afford to play like we are the biggest kids on the block.

Because a computer fail-safe malfunctioned and sent a bomber to drop a bomb on Moscow. The Russian Premier demanded retribution, so the President nuked New York.

Quite frankly, this was one of, if not THE most terrifying movie endings of all time. Period. Those of you who never lived in that time in which destruction of man was never so feared (even today in post 9/11 times) might find it hard to get what kind of an impact this made in the 1960's. This one simply was a knife across your jugular. Get the flick and watch it. You will be in for one minimalist, stark, terrifying authentic seeming cinema ride of terror.
I think the most ... ( 1 month ago by Rafaeldamian)
I think the most absolutely unbearable and powerful scene in all movie history is also in this movie. It's the one that really gets me. I can't watch it without primal, bowel loosening horror .. it's when SAC throws Col. Grady's wife, dishevelled and dragged out of bed, on secure radio to somehow persuade him to stop his bomb run on Moscow. She hysterically begs him to answer and he never does. The sheer range of human agony in her final scream of horror after he cuts her off is soul shattering

I was only a child ... ( 3 weeks ago by wmgroutofthebox)
I was only a child of fives years of age during the Cuban Missle crisis in late 1962. I am old enough to remember how scared my parents were and how frightened my patents' friends were too. We use to do a stupid futile exercise called, "Duck and Cover." During the missle crisis of 62 my school would have all of us go out into the hallway, face the wall and duck and cover. As if that would protect us from a Hydrogen Bomb! Yet mankind is just as foolish today! Nuclear War is a "Lose Lose" scenerio

The decision is ... ( 2 weeks ago by tbowles411)
The decision is incredibly difficult and no wonder that all presidents go gray after a year or two. All the worry and ugliness of the world rests upon your shoulders alone. This was just an example the Mutually Assured Destruction was never feasible. It was a war we never had to fight and I pray we never have to. As a former military man, I can tell you, no one ever wants to fight a war, especially those who wear the uniform.

FS marked the start ... ( 1 week ago by wildnites558)
FS marked the start of the liberal hysteria about the brink of thermonuclear war. It never came about, but for the past 4 decades, we heard the Marxist inspired rhetoric about the bomb. It took brilliant minds to conceive , construct and maintain nuclear weapons. Luckily, the men entrusted to those arsenals never actually brought about a nuclear war. Liberal story-telling over the last 4 decades is the only nuclear "war" we've ever known. Now they're doing the same thing with Environmentalism.

Well-said. The danger of nuclear war has always been slim to nil, regardless of the endless, illogical, ill-informed masterbatory rantings of the Left..
